Behavioural Expectations

Behaviour expectations for pupils in English schools are typically outlined in a school's behaviour policy (usually found on the school website).
These expectations can vary from one school to another. However, there are some common expectations that are generally found in English schools:
-
Respect for Others: Pupils are expected to treat all members of the school community, including teachers, staff, and fellow students, with respect and courtesy. This includes listening attentively, not interrupting when others are speaking, and being considerate of others' feelings and opinions.
-
Respect for Property: Pupils should take care of school property, as well as their own belongings. Vandalism, theft, or deliberate damage to property is not tolerated.
-
Punctuality and Attendance: Being on time for school and all classes is important. Regular attendance is also expected, and unauthorised absences are generally not permitted (Please see Attendance section for further information)
-
Uniform and Dress Code: Almost all English schools have a uniform or dress code that pupils are expected to follow. This often includes wearing the correct attire and keeping a neat and tidy appearance. Parents are expected to keep students’ uniform clean, although do reach out to the school if this is problematic or you need support with this.
-
Anti-Bullying: Bullying, including physical, verbal, and cyberbullying, is not acceptable. Pupils are encouraged to report any incidents of bullying, and schools have anti-bullying policies in place (do please see the school website for this information)
-
Safety and Health: Pupils are expected to follow safety guidelines and take responsibility for their own and others' safety. This includes adhering to fire drills and other emergency procedures.
-
Homework and Study: Completing homework on time and to the best of one's ability is an expectation. Pupils and students are also encouraged to engage actively in their studies whilst at school.
-
Respect for Rules and Policies: Schools have specific rules and policies in place, and pupils are expected to adhere to them. This includes following classroom rules and the school's behaviour policy.
-
Positive Behaviour and Effort: Positive behaviour and effort in both academic and non-academic areas are encouraged and may be rewarded with praise, certificates or other incentives (as specified by the school).
-
Conflict Resolution: Pupils are encouraged to resolve conflicts peacefully and seek help from teachers or staff if needed.
-
Respect for Diversity & Inclusion: English schools promote diversity and inclusion. Pupils are expected to treat everyone fairly and without discrimination based on factors such as race, religion, gender, disability or sexuality.
-
Cyber-safety: With the increasing use of technology, pupils are expected to adhere to cyber-safety guidelines and follow school policies regarding the use of electronic devices.
These behavior expectations are designed to create a positive and respectful learning environment for all students. Schools may have their own specific codes of conduct and disciplinary procedures that provide further details on how these expectations are enforced and what consequences may result when these expectations are not met. It's important for both children and parents to familiarise themselves with the behaviour policy of their specific school.
