Supporting Your Child...
With Attendance

Getting your child to attend school regularly is crucial for their education and overall development. It is also the Law! Below, we have outlined some things you can do to support your child in ensuring they regularly attend school on time.

Please see the Attendance page in the School System section for further information on your obligations regarding attendance.

Guidance for parents

  1. Consistent Routine:

    • Establish a daily routine that includes specific wake-up and departure times for school.

    • Create a schedule for morning tasks like getting dressed, having breakfast, and packing their school bag.

  2. Plan Ahead:

    • Prepare for the school day the night before. Lay out clothes, check homework assignments, and pack lunch or snacks in advance.

    • Make sure all necessary school supplies are organised and ready to go.

  3. Ensure Adequate Sleep:

    • Ensure your child gets enough sleep by setting a consistent bedtime. Well-rested children are more likely to be alert and ready for school in the morning.

  4. Use Alarms and Reminders:

    • Set alarms or reminders for wake-up time and departure time to help your child stay on schedule.

  5. Lead by Example:

    • Demonstrate punctuality by being on time for your own commitments and responsibilities. Children often learn from their parents' behaviour.

  6. Create a Positive Morning Atmosphere:

    • Keep mornings calm and stress-free. Avoid unnecessary conflicts or rushing, as it can lead to resistance to going to school.

  7. Offer Breakfast:

    • Provide a healthy breakfast to fuel your child's energy and concentration throughout the morning. Some schools provide free breakfast – if your school does so, do utilise this opportunity, especially if you are not able to provide one yourself.

  8. Communicate the Importance of Punctuality:

    • Explain to your child why being on time for school is essential. Discuss how it helps them succeed academically and develop good habits.

  9. Incorporate Motivation:

    • Use positive reinforcement by offering praise for consistently arriving on time.

    • Encourage your child to set goals related to punctuality and celebrate their achievements.

  10. Establish Consequences:

    • Set clear consequences for repeated lateness, such as reduced screen time or other privileges.

  11. Address Any Underlying Issues:

    • Talk to your child if they express concerns or fears about school. Addressing these issues may help improve their willingness to attend school on time.

  12. Stay Informed:

    • Stay updated on school events, early dismissals, or any changes in the school schedule to ensure you and your child are prepared.

  13. Regularly Communicate with the School:

    • Maintain open lines of communication with the school to address any issues related to punctuality. Schools may offer support or interventions if necessary.

  14. Be Patient and Supportive:

    • Understand that there may be occasional mornings when your child is not as motivated to go to school. Offer understanding and encouragement during these times.

  15. Monitor Progress:

    • Keep track of your child's punctuality and make adjustments to the routine or strategies as needed.

Consistency and positive reinforcement are key when it comes to getting your child to attend school on time. Creating a supportive and organised morning routine can help establish good habits that will benefit your child throughout their academic journey.

Finally, it pays to introduce these routines as early as possible in their academic career. It may not seem so pressing when you are dropping off your child when they are in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, but building positive habits and routines could benefit your child as they get older and take more responsibility for their own attendance.
